São Vicente - The Soul of Music.
São Vicente is Cape Verde's cultural center. Mindelo, birthplace of music legend Cesária Évora, is widely regarded as the archipelago's most beautiful town, with colonial architecture, live-music bars and its famous Carnival - and it's also the ferry port to the hiking paradise of Santo Antão. Here's everything you actually need to plan a visit, no marketing fluff.
São Vicente in 60 Seconds.
- The highlight: Mindelo - colonial architecture, live-music bars, and the birthplace of Cesária Évora, often called Cape Verde's most beautiful town.
- Carnival: Cape Verde's best-known and biggest Carnival (February/March), with Brazilian-influenced parades through Mindelo.
- Ferry hub: from Mindelo, the ferry reaches Santo Antão in around 1 hour - one of the archipelago's most popular island combinations.
- Windsurfing: the São Pedro spot is considered one of Cape Verde's most reliable wind spots.
- Not a classic beach destination: São Vicente's appeal is urban flair and music, not endless dream beaches like Sal or Boa Vista.

Who Is São Vicente Right For?
São Vicente is Cape Verde's city and culture island - not a classic beach destination. An honest look before you book.
Great for...
- Music and culture fans - live-music bars, the Cesária Évora legacy, and genuine urban flair
- Carnival visitors (February/March) - Cape Verde's best-known Carnival
- Windsurfers and kitesurfers (São Pedro)
- Travelers who want to use Mindelo as a base for a Santo Antão excursion
- Anyone who wants to combine city life with short trips to the sea
Less suited for...
- Pure beach holidaymakers - Sal, Boa Vista or Maio are far better for long sandy beaches
- Anyone seeking absolute quiet - Mindelo is Cape Verde's liveliest town, and packed especially during Carnival
- All-inclusive travelers - São Vicente has barely any classic resort infrastructure
- Hiking fans short on time - neighboring Santo Antão is the better choice for that
When's the Best Time to Visit?
Like the eastern islands, São Vicente has a dry, year-round warm climate with a steady northeast trade wind - though with a noticeably stronger breeze, especially around Mindelo.
The yearly average sits around 24-25°C. The northeast trade wind often blows harder in Mindelo's bay than on the eastern islands, which makes São Vicente a reliable windsurfing destination, but also makes evening walks by the water windier than elsewhere. November to June is considered the best time to visit.
Carnival as Its Own Travel Season
Mindelo's Carnival in February or March counts as high season in its own right - flights and accommodation book out early and cost more than usual. If you're coming specifically for Carnival, book months in advance; if you'd rather avoid it, plan outside this window. Weeks beforehand, the "Mandingas" already set the mood with Sunday parades from the Ribeira Bote neighborhood into the center, and the highlight is usually the Monday parade led by the Samba Tropical samba school.
The Beaches of São Vicente.
São Vicente isn't a pure beach island, but it has a few solid spots for windsurfers, families and day trips.
São Pedro
A fishing village on the southwest coast with one of Cape Verde's most reliable wind spots - steady, strong wind makes it a destination for experienced windsurfers and kitesurfers.
Baía das Gatas
A natural lagoon on the northeast coast, sheltered and therefore calmer than open stretches of coastline - a popular excursion spot and the traditional venue for a well-known music festival in August.
Praia da Laginha
The town beach right in Mindelo - small, but practical if you want a quick dip without a car. No comparison to the long beaches of Sal or Boa Vista, but conveniently located.
Salamansa
A quiet fishing village on the north coast with more extensive dunes and sand than Mindelo itself - a good contrast to city life, and less developed for tourism.
More Than Just Mindelo.
The Cesária Évora Legacy
The "Barefoot Diva" was born in Mindelo and remains Cape Verde's most internationally renowned voice to this day. A statue at the harbor and numerous live-music bars across town keep her legacy alive.
Colonial Architecture of the Old Town
Pastel-colored colonial buildings, including the historic Mercado Municipal market and the Centro Cultural do Mindelo - to many visitors, Mindelo is Cape Verde's architecturally most beautiful town.
Monte Verde
The island's highest point (around 750 m), with views across much of São Vicente and, on a clear day, as far as Santo Antão and São Nicolau - a popular afternoon excursion.
CNAD - Centro Nacional de Artesanato e Design
A cultural center opened in 2022, with a striking facade made of thousands of colorfully painted, recycled barrel lids - galleries, a library, and a training center for Cape Verdean crafts and design all under one roof.
Live Music as Everyday Culture
◐ Community valueUnlike on the beach islands, live music in Mindelo isn't a tourist show program but lived everyday culture - in several bars in the old town, local musicians play morna, coladeira and funaná in the evenings. The most authentic approach: just head out in the evening and follow the music rather than booking a fixed program.
Three Towns, Three Faces.
Mindelo, São Pedro and Salamansa each show a different side of the island.
Mindelo
By far the island's most important town: a port city, the cultural heart of Cape Verde, and the starting point for practically every activity on São Vicente. Colonial architecture, live-music bars, restaurants, and the ferry port to Santo Antão all sit close together.
São Pedro
A small fishing village on the windy southwest coast, mainly relevant to visitors for windsurfing and kitesurfing - quieter and simpler than Mindelo, with direct access to the wind spot.
Salamansa
A small, unspoiled fishing village on the north coast with extensive dunes - a good day trip to escape Mindelo's city life for a few hours.
What to Experience on São Vicente.
Live Music in Mindelo
Evening bar-hopping through the old town, where local musicians play morna, coladeira and funaná - mostly informal, no fixed ticket program needed.
Carnival (Feb/Mar)
Cape Verde's best-known Carnival, with Brazilian-influenced parades, costumes and music through the streets of Mindelo - booking flights and accommodation well in advance is strongly recommended.
Windsurfing & Kitesurfing at São Pedro
Reliable wind makes São Pedro a serious spot for experienced watersports enthusiasts, with schools and rental equipment on site.
Day Trip to Santo Antão
Ferry from Mindelo to Porto Novo (ca. 1 hr), then via the Corda mountain pass road into hiking paradise - also doable as a day trip without an overnight stay if time is tight.
Climbing Monte Verde
A short to moderate hike or drive to the island's highest point, with a wide panoramic view - a good counterbalance to Mindelo's city program.
Baía das Gatas & Salamansa
Day trips to the sheltered Baía das Gatas lagoon or the quiet fishing village of Salamansa - a good contrast to the bustle of Mindelo, reachable by Aluguer or rental car.
Sea turtle conservation center in Calhau
In the fishing village of Calhau, near Baía das Gatas, the local organization Cesar (Centro de Estudos e Apoio à Recuperação de Tartarugas) runs a protection and research center for sea turtles. São Vicente is less known for turtles than Boa Vista or Sal, but has its own active nesting sites on several beaches around Calhau.
Community tip: nesting beaches deliberately not shared publicly
◐ Community valueMembers of our Facebook community who live in Calhau deliberately don't share the exact location of the nesting beaches publicly - to avoid crowds and disturbance at the nesting sites. If you want to learn more, it's best to ask locally or reach out to the conservation center directly. For context: consuming turtle meat and eggs has been illegal in Cape Verde since 2018.
How Much Time to Plan for São Vicente?
Three example rhythms for orientation - not a rigid plan, but a template to adapt.
City Trip
- Day 1: Arrival, Mindelo old town, sunset at the harbor
- Day 2: Monte Verde, live-music bar tour in the evening
- Day 3: Baía das Gatas or Praia da Laginha, departure
City & Santo Antão Combined
- Day 1-2: Explore Mindelo, colonial architecture, music
- Day 3: Monte Verde & Salamansa
- Day 4-6: Ferry to Santo Antão, hiking in Ribeira Grande & Ribeira do Paúl
- Day 7: Return ferry to Mindelo, departure
Around February/March
- In advance: book flight and accommodation several months ahead - Carnival week is the most in-demand time of year in Mindelo
- On the ground: set aside several days for parades, street parties and live music, and bring good stamina and patience for crowded streets
Arriving & Getting Around.
What actually matters after landing - entry, cash, SIM card and getting around the island.
Entry & Airport Tax (VXE)
Travelers from the EU, UK, US and Canada can enter visa-free for stays up to 30 days; most other nationalities, including Australia, get a visa on arrival. Before departure, the paid online registration via the official EASE portal is mandatory, including airport tax (TSA) of currently 3,400 CVE (ca. €31) - usually cheaper and faster online via ease.gov.cv than paying at a counter on arrival.
Aluguer (Shared Taxis) & Taxis
The airport sits near São Pedro, roughly 5 km southwest of Mindelo - a taxi into the center usually costs about 1,100-1,250 CVE and takes 15-20 minutes. Within Mindelo and to nearby towns like São Pedro or Salamansa, shared Aluguer taxis are the cheapest option; within the town itself, much is walkable.
Money & ATMs
As the country's second-largest city, Mindelo has good ATM coverage. Cards with Maestro/Cirrus work reliably; V-Pay cards don't work everywhere - plan for a backup card plus some cash.
Getting a SIM Card Locally
Alou and Unitel T+ both have shops right in Mindelo - good network coverage in town, though the signal can weaken outside it (for example on the way to Monte Verde).
Rental Car & Driving Licence
Not necessary for the town itself, but useful for day trips to São Pedro, Salamansa or Baía das Gatas. Driving is on the right, as in most of Europe; an International Driving Permit alongside your national licence is recommended by most foreign offices.
Tipping & Etiquette
There's no fixed tipping system. Voluntary rounding up is common but not expected, or around 5-10% for good service at restaurants and bars.
What You Should Watch Out For.
General Safety
São Vicente is generally considered safe, but Mindelo, with around 70,700 residents, is Cape Verde's second-largest town - the usual big-city caution applies, especially at night and away from busy areas: don't carry valuables openly, and in poorly lit old-town alleys, go with someone rather than alone. Check your own country's current travel advisories before departure.
Medical Care
Hospital Dr. Baptista de Sousa in Mindelo is the referral hospital for the entire Barlavento island group in Cape Verde's north - smaller islands often transfer more serious cases here. That gives São Vicente one of the better medical infrastructures in the archipelago, though international health insurance with genuine repatriation cover is still recommended.
Health & Vaccinations
The usual travel vaccinations (including tetanus/diphtheria, hepatitis A) are recommended - consult a doctor before your trip. Cape Verde has been officially malaria-free since January 2024. In 2023/2024 there was a nationwide dengue outbreak (around 19,000 cases, 8 deaths, declared over in January 2025) - initially centered on Fogo, but shifting clearly to the capital Praia on Santiago as the year went on; treat this as general, nationwide Cape Verde information.
Emergency Numbers
Police 132 · Fire Brigade 131 · Ambulance 130. According to several international travel sources, these are also reachable without a SIM card (we couldn't find an official confirmation that calls are free of charge) - save them to your phone right on arrival.

Planning More Than Just a Vacation?
Digital nomad life, island hopping, or real estate interest - three topics that go beyond simple vacation planning.
Digital Nomad in Mindelo
As the country's second-largest city, Mindelo has a more solid infrastructure than most other islands - more cafés, better ATM coverage and shorter distances than on Sal or Boa Vista. Cape Verde has its own remote-work residency program under Law 27/X/2023.
Digital Nomads Guide →Combining With Santo Antão
The short ferry to Porto Novo makes São Vicente and Santo Antão one of the most straightforward island combinations in Cape Verde - city and music here, hiking and quiet there.
Flights & Island Hopping →Buying Property in Mindelo
As a town with stable rental demand (partly driven by its culture and student scene), Mindelo's market differs noticeably from the resort islands. A tax number (NIF), an independent lawyer, and a land registry entry (Registo Predial) remain mandatory before any payment.
Available soon (EN)How Do You Get to São Vicente?
From Europe
⚠ Subject to changePure flight time from Frankfurt to Cesária Évora Airport (VXE) is around 7 hours. Direct flights are rarer than to Sal or Boa Vista - the usual route is via Sal, Lisbon or Praia with a connecting flight. Check the current flight schedule before booking.
As a Hub for Santo Antão
Ferries to Porto Novo (Santo Antão) depart from Mindelo, with a crossing time of around 1 hour. The main operator, CV Interilhas, usually runs daily around 7am plus additional afternoon departures on some days, with return crossings from Porto Novo correspondingly in the morning and late afternoon - the price for non-residents is around 1,500 CVE one way. Tickets are available directly at the harbor building in Mindelo; check the current schedule and prices on the ground, since times can change on short notice.
What Actually Helps on São Vicente.
Not a generic travel packing list, but what makes a real difference specifically on São Vicente.
- Comfortable shoes for Mindelo's cobblestone old town
- A light jacket for windy evenings by the harbor
- Cash in escudos plus a Maestro/Cirrus backup card
- If visiting for Carnival: book accommodation and flights months in advance
- Your national driving licence, plus an International Driving Permit if renting a car
- Your EASE confirmation and return ticket, both digital and printed, ready to hand
- If planning the ferry to Santo Antão: build in a time buffer in case of cancellations due to rough seas
Sources & Page Status
- Sea turtle conservation center in Calhau added (Nov 3, 2026): existence of "Cesar - Centro de Estudos e Apoio à Recuperação de Tartarugas" confirmed via Google Maps; exact nesting beach locations deliberately not named to avoid publicizing the nesting sites. Ban on consumption since 2018: Legislative Decree No. 1/2018, confirmed via FAOLEX/UNEP and ecolex.org.
- Area (ca. 227 km²): 226.7 km² per Wikipedia, confirmed.
- Carnival facts (largest/best-known Carnival in Cape Verde, Brazilian-influenced, rooted in the Portuguese Entrudo tradition): cross-checked and confirmed - based on consistent assessment across several independent travel/culture sources, not on hard attendance-number statistics (no such survey was found).
- Population 74,016 and Mindelo 70,732 residents: 2021 Census, INE Cabo Verde (making Mindelo Cape Verde's second-largest city).
- Climate data (yearly average ~24-25°C): Wikipedia's climate table for Mindelo (1981-2010) gives a yearly mean of 23.6°C (21.6-26.5°C depending on the month) - within the slightly rounded range used here.
- Safety & Health section added: this page was previously the only already-translated island missing its own Safety & Health section with emergency numbers and malaria/dengue status - added to match the sitewide standard (emergency numbers 132/131/130, malaria-free since January 2024, the 2023/2024 dengue outbreak with the already sitewide-corrected Fogo→Santiago shift). The existing note about Hospital Dr. Baptista de Sousa as the Barlavento referral hospital was moved from "Arriving & Getting Around" into this new section.
