Dry season & short rainy season.
Cape Verde has a dry tropical climate with a long dry season from November to July and a short rainy season from August to October. The rainy season is much more pronounced on the mountainous islands - Santiago, Fogo, Brava, and Santo Antão get noticeably more rainfall than the flat islands Sal, Boa Vista, and Maio, which stay very dry and desert-like year-round. Exact rainfall amounts vary significantly from year to year and by measuring station - as a rough guide, this distinction by terrain is usually sufficient.
Air temperature stays pleasant year-round, between roughly 22 and 30 °C, with the hottest months in late summer/early autumn. Water temperature sits at a comfortable 22-27 °C year-round, coolest in February/March (around 22 °C) and warmest in September/October (around 27 °C) - a wetsuit isn't necessary for most travelers.
In addition to the rainy season, the Harmattan shapes the climate: a wind from the Sahara that carries fine Saharan dust across the archipelago roughly between December and March - known locally as "Bruma Seca." Visibility can be significantly reduced as a result, and during pronounced episodes, domestic flights between the islands are sometimes delayed or cancelled. All islands are affected, though the exact intensity varies from year to year.
Not every island behaves the same.
Sal & Boa Vista
Flat, desert-like, barely any rain even in the rainy season - reliably sunny and windy year-round, ideal for beach and kitesurfing.
Maio
Similarly dry to Sal/Boa Vista, but less wind-exposed - a calmer microclimate.
Santiago
A more noticeable rainy season in late summer, greener landscape than the desert islands, especially in the island's interior.
Fogo & Brava
Mountainous, a more pronounced rainy season, cooler temperatures at altitude - ideal for hiking outside the rainy season.
Santo Antão
The greenest and most humid island of the archipelago, with pronounced microclimates between the north (humid) and south (drier).
São Vicente & São Nicolau
Windy, moderately dry, an in-between climate - a good compromise between desert and mountain climate.
When to travel for what?
Kitesurfing & Windsurfing
The trade wind on Sal is reliable year-round, strongest between December and April. Sal is considered one of the most famous kitesurfing destinations in the Atlantic.
Hiking
On Santo Antão and Fogo, the dry season from November to March is the most pleasant - cooler temperatures and dry trails. During the rainy season, trails can get slippery and rivers in the ribeiras impassable.
Whale Watching
Humpback whales migrate past Boa Vista and Sal to calve from February to May - the main season for whale-watching tours.
Shoulder-Season Advantages
September/October (end of the rainy season) offers lower prices and fewer tourists - a trade-off for anyone weighing weather risk against peace and budget.
One Route, Two Climate Zones
If you combine a desert island (Sal/Boa Vista) with a mountain island (Santo Antão/Fogo) in one trip, you'll experience two completely different climate zones - impressive, but plan your packing accordingly (rain gear for the mountains, possible even in the dry season).
Festivals & events through the year.
The most important recurring festivals in Cape Verde - many dates shift slightly from year to year, so we give the usual time window and, as a concrete example, the most recently confirmed 2026 dates instead of a fixed date.
| Festival | Island | Usual Time Window | Last Confirmed (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Festa dos 3 Homens | Boa Vista | always Jan 6 | Jan 6, 2026 |

Note: This table was researched in October 2026 - the 2026 dates mentioned are already in the past for future travelers and serve only as an example of the usual timing. For concrete trip planning, please check current dates directly with the official tourism authority (visit-caboverde.com/en/events) or the respective organizer, since dates (especially Carnaval, which follows the movable Easter calendar, and Baía das Gatas, which follows the full moon) shift every year.

- For festivals without a confirmed single 2026 date (Grito Rock, Festival de Gamboa, Laginha, Kavala Fresk, Batuku, Morna Jazz, Mindelact), only the usual month is deliberately given instead of an invented day date.
- Water temperature (22-27 °C, corrected Oct 15, 2026): Several independent sources for Sal, Boa Vista, and Mindelo (incl. wetter.de/DWD climate data, meerestemperatur.de, seatemperature.info) agree on an annual range of roughly 22 °C (February/March) to roughly 27 °C (September/October). The previously stated 24-28 °C was too high and has been corrected.
- Saharan dust/"Bruma Seca" added (Oct 21, 2026): this factor, relevant to visibility and domestic flights, was previously missing entirely from this page, even though it's already mentioned elsewhere (fogo.html). Time window and visibility impact independently confirmed via a scientific study on seasonal Saharan dust patterns over Cape Verde as well as NOAA/NASA earth observation sources - the stated time window varies by source between Nov.-March (Harmattan wind) and Oct.-March (ground-level dust concentration); here the slightly narrower, traveler-relevant Dec.-March range was deliberately chosen.
