New Year's Eve in Cape Verde: celebrating where the Atlantic begins.
"There isn't much to see there, though" is the most common thing we hear before a New Year's trip to Cape Verde - and it answers the wrong question. Cape Verde isn't a sightseeing destination with museums and old towns, but a year-end celebration with an Atlantic view: dry season, warm water, and - especially in Mindelo - one of Cape Verde's best-known New Year's Eve parties.
"Not much to see" - true, but not meant that way.
If your idea of a destination is an old town with a cathedral, a museum, and a castle, you'll genuinely find little of that in Cape Verde - with the exception of Cidade Velha on Santiago, which UNESCO describes as the first European colonial town built in the tropics, and which is now a World Heritage Site. But that's not what Cape Verde is booked for. People come here for volcanic landscapes, miles of empty beaches, hikes through Santo Antão's ravines, and a music and festival culture with several highlights spread across the year (see Events & Festivals) - at the turn of the year, especially in Mindelo, one of them. For a New Year's trip, that's actually an advantage: instead of working through a checklist, you simply plan around the holidays - the beach, one or two excursions, and the party on December 31.
Climate-wise, the turn of the year is one of the best travel periods anyway: December falls right in the dry season (see Best Time & Climate) - barely any rainfall, air temperature at the lower, pleasant end of the yearly range of 22-30°C, water temperature around 24°C in December (22-27°C year-round). The only thing is that the trade wind is strongest between December and April, which makes Sal extra attractive for kitesurfers but can also make a jacket worthwhile for evenings on open beaches.
Where is it really celebrated?
Every municipality in Cape Verde puts on its own public New Year's celebration with fireworks and live music - documented for the 2025/26 turn of the year in Praia, Mindelo, Sal, Boa Vista, Santo Antão, and Fogo. Mindelo remains the biggest and most internationally known party, but it's by no means the only one.
Mindelo - the biggest "Passagem de Ano" Avenida Marginal & Rua de Lisboa
Mindelo traditionally hosts the country's best-known and best-documented New Year's celebration, in recent years with a multi-day concert program in the week before New Year's Eve. The municipal administration regularly organizes an official fireworks display over the bay that, per consistent past sources, has lasted roughly 10-15 minutes - solid figures for the coming turn of the year only become available shortly beforehand, usually not until December. Thousands gather on the waterfront promenade, the Avenida Marginal, a town band plays into the night, and a locally common tradition is jumping into the sea (still pleasantly warm in December) shortly after midnight. On January 1, the town band traditionally sets off again around 11am and is greeted along the way by residents with food, drinks, and small tips - a recurring custom that visitors can simply join.
More on São Vicente →Praia - the capital's celebration Largo da Quebra Canela
The capital has its own big New Year's celebration too: for the 2025/26 turn of the year, it took place at Largo da Quebra Canela, from 9pm into the early morning, with local artists and a roughly 12-minute fireworks display at midnight from Praça da Cruz de Papa. According to the local press, the city's hotels were fully booked for New Year's, partly because many Cape Verdeans living abroad spend the holidays at home.
Municipal celebration or resort gala Espargos, Santa Maria, Boa Vista
On Sal, the last turn of the year saw two municipal celebrations at once - in the island capital Espargos and in the tourist town Santa Maria, each with live music from 11pm. Boa Vista celebrated publicly at Largo da EMPA, also with live bands and DJs. Alongside this, the big all-inclusive resort chains typically offer their own New Year's entertainment with live music, sometimes a gala dinner too - whether and in what form that specifically includes fireworks for 2026/27 isn't confirmed across the board and should be checked directly with the hotel. Guests who stay at the hotel mostly celebrate there; those who want to venture out also have the municipal program.
More on Hotels & Resorts →Here too: fireworks and live bands Ribeira Grande, Porto Novo, São Filipe
Even the quieter mountain islands have public New Year's programs: Santo Antão most recently celebrated at two locations at once (Ponta do Sol near Ribeira Grande and Praia de Armazém near Porto Novo), each with live bands and fireworks at midnight. On Fogo, São Filipe held a celebration at the Centro Cultural Armand Montrond. For the smaller islands of Maio, Brava, and São Nicolau, we have no comparable coverage - New Year's there is likely smaller and more private.
The midnight jump into the sea - with common sense
Jumping into the sea at midnight is firmly established in Mindelo, but at night and in unfamiliar water, that's exactly the situation the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) explicitly warns about for Cape Verde's coasts: strong tides and currents along with unpredictable waves and undertow. Our own recommendation: stay close to shore, don't go into the water alone or after drinking, and avoid unlit stretches away from the promenade. Details on swimming safety in our Safety guide.
What makes a New Year's trip special.
December is peak season in Cape Verde - European winter fatigue meets the dry season and pleasant temperatures, and flights and accommodation see demand rise accordingly. On top of that, many Cape Verdeans living abroad visit their families at exactly this time, further loading up flights. Booking early - similar to Carnival or the Festival de Baía das Gatas - pays off noticeably, especially for accommodation in Mindelo right on or near the Avenida Marginal.
January 1 is a public holiday - many shops stay closed, and restaurants and tours may have limited hours. Plan New Year's Day more as a recovery day than an excursion day, and if you do have an excursion planned, confirm the provider's availability in advance.
Sources & status of this page
- Fireworks & proceedings in Mindelo: consistently described by mindelocaboverde.com ("5 things you need to know about New Year in Mindelo") and walking-capeverde.com: the Avenida Marginal as the central location, organized by the São Vicente municipal administration. Fireworks-duration figures vary slightly between sources (at least 10 vs. around 15 minutes) - hence given here as a "10-15 minute" range. Important (added 15 Oct. 2026): these are figures from past years, not an official confirmation for 2026/27 - a local event calendar (Walking Cape Verde) explicitly notes that the program for the coming turn of the year won't be announced until December. Tour-operator offers already advertising fireworks for 2026/27 are not an official program announcement.
- Town-band parade on January 1, midnight sea jump, indoor parties: source mindelocaboverde.com; the ticket prices mentioned there (around €20) come from a single local blog post and may have changed since.
- The term "Passagem de Ano": verified via Cape Verdean news coverage (noticiasaominuto.com), which explicitly uses the term for New Year's celebrations on São Vicente.
- Resort New Year's on Sal & Boa Vista (clarified 15 Oct. 2026): major resort chains generally confirm entertainment offerings and live music over the holidays; a specific New Year's fireworks display isn't automatically guaranteed by that and should be confirmed directly with the respective hotel.
- Christmas/New Year's traditions nationwide: capeverdeislands.org confirms beach fireworks, December as peak season, and the homecoming of Cape Verdeans living abroad for the holidays. Regarding the statement "shops closed on January 1": per capeverdeislands.org, individual shops in tourist areas may stay open, hence "many shops" here rather than an absolute statement.
- January 1 as a public holiday (added 15 Oct. 2026): in addition to the general source, confirmed by the official bank calendar of the Cape Verdean central bank (bcv.cv), which lists Ano Novo as a nationwide holiday.
- Cidade Velha: the UNESCO World Heritage Centre literally describes the town as "the first European colonial town to be built in the tropics" - translated here as the "first... European colonial town built in the tropics" instead of the previously less precise wording "oldest."
- Swimming-safety source corrected (15 Oct. 2026): the previous version incorrectly cited the German Federal Foreign Office for the current/drowning warning - a direct check of the current AA safety notices found no statement there about currents or drowning. The correct source for this warning is the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (GOV.UK/FCDO), which explicitly warns about strong tides, currents, and unpredictable waves with undertow for Cape Verde's coasts. The advice not to swim after drinking alcohol is our own general safety recommendation, not an official citation.
- December climate data: air-temperature range taken from Best Time & Climate. The water temperature was independently corrected on 15 Oct. 2026, based on several independent sources (wetter.de/DWD climate data, meerestemperatur.de, seatemperature.info), to around 24°C in December - a previously too-high range (24-28°C) was corrected both here and on the best-time-to-visit page.
- Praia, Sal, Boa Vista, Santo Antão & Fogo for the 2025/26 turn of the year (corrected 15 Oct. 2026): based on the article "Festas de fim de ano para todos os gostos e bolsos" by expressodasilhas.cv (30 Dec. 2025, a leading Cape Verdean outlet), which documents specific locations, times, and artists for the islands named. An earlier version of this page incorrectly portrayed the other islands as mostly private/unorganized - that wasn't sufficiently supported and has been corrected. For Maio, Brava, and São Nicolau, we still have no comparable coverage.
- Important caveat: all location, time, and artist details for Praia, Sal, Boa Vista, Santo Antão, and Fogo refer to the 2025/26 turn of the year and are not an announcement for 2026/27 - but the pattern (municipal celebrations with fireworks on several islands) is plausible across multiple years, not just a one-year coincidence.
Questions about New Year's Eve in Cape Verde.
Is it true there isn't much to see in Cape Verde?
In the classic sense (museums, old towns, monuments), yes - with the exception of Cidade Velha on Santiago (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). But Cape Verde is a nature and beach destination: volcanic landscapes, hiking on Santo Antão and Fogo, water sports, and - especially around New Year's - a lively festival culture. The question "what is there to see" is usually the wrong one for this destination.
Where is New Year's Eve busiest in Cape Verde?
In Mindelo on São Vicente - in past years with fireworks on the Avenida Marginal, a multi-day concert program, and the traditional midnight jump into the sea; the specific program for 2026/27 was not yet officially confirmed as of our last check. It's the biggest and most internationally known celebration, but by no means the only one: Praia, Sal, Boa Vista, Santo Antão, and Fogo also have their own public fireworks and concert programs.
How is New Year's Eve celebrated on Sal and Boa Vista?
Both islands have public, municipally organized celebrations with live music and fireworks (on Sal, most recently in both Espargos and Santa Maria at once; on Boa Vista at Largo da EMPA). Alongside this, the big all-inclusive resorts offer their own New Year's entertainment - for details on the specific program (including fireworks), it's best to ask the hotel directly.
How warm is it in Cape Verde on New Year's Eve?
December falls in the dry season: air temperature usually 22-27°C, water temperature around 24°C (22-27°C year-round). Details in our Best Time guide.
Do I need to book early for a New Year's trip?
Yes - December is peak season, further intensified by Cape Verdeans living abroad visiting their families over the holidays. Flights and accommodation, especially in Mindelo, should be booked correspondingly early.
Details on fireworks, ticket prices, and program specifics mostly refer to the 2025/26 turn of the year and can change from year to year - the program for 2026/27 isn't known at the time of publication. Confirm details locally or directly with the relevant municipal administration.
